I’m always amazed at how many people actually have a Discord Nitro subscription. From students to the unemployed to adult family men. A not-so-small group of users is motivated to pay €99.99 per year for the Nitro package. But… why?
What do I get for €100 a year? A sum for which I could get a subscription to an MMO, Netflix, YouTube Premium, or Spotify. A custom tag, an enhanced profile, emojis that can be used on all servers, a higher upload limit, and better screen sharing quality.
That’s it. Okay, two boosts. With boosts, you can support servers and unlock features there. Basically, premium servers financed by the users. But here too, the prices are, to put it mildly, outrageous. One boost costs €3.50 with a discount; you need two for the first level, seven for the second, and fourteen for the third. That’s €7.00, €24.50, or €49. Discord is certainly making people pay for its reach and popularity.
But back to Nitro. The features are nice, but not worth €99.99 to me. The emojis and profiles would be the only interesting features for me. If I seriously want to stream, I’ll do it on Twitch/YouTube. I don’t need Discord for uploads; there are countless alternatives, and the custom tag? I don’t care.
Do you have Discord Nitro? If so, why?
