If you haven’t read the first part of our travelogue yet, this way please: England #1: The Journey, Canterbury and London
We always approach our travels spontaneously, and our journey from London towards Cornwall was no exception. We set off from London around noon and got another little sightseeing tour. This time, however, it was by car, and we experienced the commuting nightmare of many an English person who does NOT live in London and drives. So, we went straight across the city center. I was lucky enough to be the passenger and experience the big city life. Kernic had to drive! But from what I could tell, it was totally fine despite the huge crowds and driving on the left.
On the way to Oxford, we planned a quick stop in Windsor. But we made this plan without accounting for the traffic and the time. We arrived at dusk, so our visit was limited to just driving through. What stuck in my memory, though, was a large area with the castle/palace, lots of tourists, and a charming town. We decided we want to come back.
Just like in London, Oxford also has a city toll. We quickly bought a ticket, for two days of course. The silly part was that we could have driven around the zone, our hotel wasn’t in said zone, and we didn’t even take that route the next day.
In Oxford, we first looked for a hotel. This time, it was the Easyhotel. My first thought: the room is a shoebox with a bed. We treated ourselves to a window so we could at least get some daylight. After booking, we just grabbed something to eat and enjoyed dinner in bed. The next day, we were allowed to leave the car in the hotel’s own parking lot. We took the bus into Oxford, which was super straightforward and quite fast. Oxford itself is a small, charming town with very beautiful architecture. Of course, we also visited the university buildings. Impressive. The city is wonderful for walks and breaks in cafés. If you’re ever in the area, it’s not a bad idea to spend some time there.
For more than one or two days? Probably not. The city is charming, but also small. I assume, however, that it serves as a good base for further explorations in the area. We saw the most interesting sights in four hours and then continued on our way to Cornwall.
