On Reddit, I stumbled upon a post in the Ghost subreddit. They were looking for testers for a new Ghost theme called finebits. The theme promised to be minimalist, simple, and clean. Since I wasn’t happy with my previous theme, I thought: Why not?
A very brief email exchange later, I was able to purchase the theme from the official store, free of charge thanks to a discount code. But even without it, buying the $89 theme would have been very simple. Just like the installation. Download the zip file, log into Ghost, go to the theme selection, and upload the zip file via Upload Theme. Everything else is then configured in the admin interface. Here, too, the options are very simple.
The accent color is the color used aside from black and white. The logo should definitely be small and square (or round). Unlike many other themes, the logo in FineBits is very subtle, appearing as a small icon in the menu bar. If you opt for featured posts, up to four featured posts will be displayed on the homepage. It always shows the four most recent ones. A special feature is the footer, where both the heading and the text can be set freely. And for the more professional authors, there’s the option to link their LinkedIn and Instagram profiles. But that’s about it.
All in all, I’m very satisfied with the theme and have decided to keep it for my blog. Of course, I didn’t get the theme for free just for fun, but to test it and provide feedback. Personally, I would be happy if the theme were also available in German, simply because everything else on my blog is in German.
While writing this post, I had the idea to take a closer look at the theme files to see if I could translate them. I could, which is why the theme here is now in German. An official translation would be nicer, of course.
The creator’s origin from an English-speaking country is also noticeable. For social media options, besides the Ghost-integrated sites Twitter (now X) and Facebook, there are LinkedIn and Instagram. No Mastodon, no Bluesky, no Discord. A pity, but understandable. Discord is more of a gaming platform, and Bluesky and Mastodon are not widely used outside the EU and Japan.
I’m satisfied, but what do you think of the theme?
