I've Gotten Too Fat

An honest admission: I've gotten too fat. The moment of realization and the decision to change something. The start of my weight loss journey and why I'm writing about it publicly.

I’ve been saying it for a few years now: I’m not too heavy, I’m just too short for my weight. The part about my height is, of course, true. At 167 cm (5'6"), I’m quite short, especially for a man. When my weight climbed to 90kg (198 lbs) last year and settled there, it was already critical for me.

But the four days of working from home have made it even worse, and I now weigh a few kilos more again. The scale is broken, so I’m not entirely sure. But the pants from last year barely fit, or don’t fit at all. Most of the fat collects on my stomach, giving me a classic beer belly or pregnancy belly.

This is also slowly starting to affect my daily life. I sweat faster in high temperatures, I get out of breath quickly, and I’m generally not very fit. Smoking doesn’t exactly help with that. But one thing at a time; first, I have to admit to myself: I’m fat. Too fat, no longer just a little potbelly.

And then come the consequences of this realization: I have to lose weight, I have to exercise, I have to get fitter. Unfortunately, the next step is always the hardest. So far, I haven’t done any exercise. Even the walking pad at my standing desk serves exclusively as a footrest.

But no more of that. My plan: Go from over 90kg (198 lbs) down to 65kg (143 lbs). 60kg (132 lbs) would be ideal, which would be the long-term goal. How do I plan to achieve this?

  1. More movement, even during work, aka the walking pad.
  2. Exercise 3 times a week - cycling or rowing machine.
  3. Eat more consciously: Massively cut back on sweets and sugary drinks. More tea, more fruits and vegetables.
  4. Optional: Archery for my back and concentration. I’ve heard that you can find your inner peace through archery.

And to put myself under pressure, the first thing I’ll do is get a new scale. Additionally, I’ll post a brief update here once a week.

Starting as soon as I have the scale in use.
